Wrought Iron
Benches
Whenever I think of the park in the community
that I lived in when I was a child, I think of wrought iron
benches. These practical objects have grown into icons of
childhood play for me and my siblings. While there were plenty
of other things to set our focus on in the playground, somehow
the wrought iron benches always seemed to stand out.
I guess that it was due to the simple fact that
the wrought iron benches in the park were so striking. The
beautiful metal furniture seemed as if they had always been
there and I’m sure that they still remain in the same place.
The benches reminded me of another time and place depending on
my interests at the time.
For example, when I was learning about Greek
and Roman Mythology, I looked at the wrought iron benches as
relics from this era. They would serve to be great seating for
goddesses like me and my sisters while at play. As we grew, our
interests changed so did the wrought iron benches in the
park.
Soon we began reading stories about the
Victorian Era and we soon began imagining ourselves in this
place in time. The wrought iron benches suited our play
perfectly considering their classic elegant style that fits
perfectly into the Victorian mode. Of course, we grew out of
this stage once Star Wars came out in theaters.
During the era of Star Wars and The Empire
Strikes Back the wrought iron benches took on a whole new feel.
We used them as seating for the cockpit of our spaceships and
somehow the flexible wrought iron benches played along
seamlessly. You would have never guessed that they had been
used for ancient Greece in years past.
My experiences with the wrought iron benches
have prompted me to find similar items for my own back yard. I
know that this outdoor furniture will suit just about any style
imaginable. After all, the wrought iron benches in the park
have taken me from ancient Greece all the way to outer
space.
I can only imagine where the wrought iron
benches will take my own children in years to come. I guess
that time will tell. Hopefully, my little ones will find these
pieces of outdoor furniture as exciting and memorable as I did
when I was a child. Who knows? Maybe they will get wrought iron
benches of their own when they grow up.
